In a tearful moment, Kelly Stafford, wife of ex-Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford, speaks out about the “awful” online abuse she’s received.
Kelly’s candid and unfiltered presence on social media is mostly well-received, but it occasionally leads to misunderstandings of her words.
While fame might seem desirable, it often comes with unforeseen challenges. Although being famous has its perks, it also has its downsides, which can be hard to cope with. In her most recent podcast episode, Kelly, wife of Matthew Stafford, discussed the negative side of fame, focusing on online trolls and the emotional toll their comments have had on her.
Kelly’s genuine and straightforward social media presence is mostly appreciated, but it sometimes results in her words being taken out of context.
For instance, Kelly recently stated that she didn’t enjoy “green bean casserole,” which was somehow twisted into a headline claiming she disliked holidays. This type of misunderstanding has happened repeatedly, leading Kelly to openly express how hurtful online hate can be.
“If you’re listening and you’re one of those people leaving hurtful comments on Instagram… just stop. It’s painful, and you never know how much your words can affect someone. So please, stop.”
Kelly admitted that her tears came from feeling powerless against the trolls. She also revealed that she doesn’t share the hateful comments with Matthew or anyone else.
“I don’t tell my husband or anyone, like ‘look what someone said…’ It feels isolating, and I feel unsupported. I try to deal with it on my own, but it doesn’t work.”
But in 2025, Kelly plans to make a change. The host of the “Morning After” podcast revealed that one of her New Year’s resolutions is to focus only on the opinions of people who truly matter to her.
“It’s terrifying to raise four girls in a world where strangers’ opinions matter. My resolution is to remind myself every day that only the opinions of those I love count… I really want to quit social media. It’s starting to impact my mental health.”
Kelly’s story highlights the negative side of social media. Without boundaries, negativity can easily overshadow the positive moments. She is determined to avoid letting this happen.
