Lions’ Dan Campbell reveals the steps necessary to activate Alex Anzalone

The Detroit Lions are uncertain about linebacker Alex Anzalone’s availability for the upcoming game against the Minnesota Vikings.

This uncertainty was amplified when Anzalone spoke to the media on Thursday, admitting that he’s not fully healthy and is unsure about his status due to not being able to go at full speed.

As the team’s captain, Anzalone explained that the challenge lies in balancing the ability to play at full intensity while also staying protected for a potential Super Bowl run.

Anzalone acknowledged he hasn’t had the chance to tackle anyone yet, although he’s been working on drills to simulate game conditions as closely as possible.

He emphasized that it all comes down to how he feels, indicating that it’s difficult to determine his readiness without full-contact situations.

Head coach Dan Campbell expressed agreement with Anzalone’s cautious approach, stating that the team needs to be sure that Anzalone can play at full speed and feel comfortable doing so before he can be activated.

Anzalone returned to practice this week after being placed on a 21-day window for activation following a broken forearm that has sidelined him since Week 11. During practice, Anzalone wore a cast made of carbon fiber and padding on his injured forearm.

On Friday, Campbell spoke further about Anzalone’s progress, noting that the linebacker had earned enough trust to be able to practice.

He was pleased with Anzalone’s performance, stating there were no setbacks and that he looked good on the field.

However, Campbell emphasized the importance of the next few days for Anzalone to gain confidence and comfort. The Lions’ coaching staff values preparing players gradually through practice before putting them into game situations.

This method allows the player to ease into the game, and Campbell indicated that they aim to follow this approach with Anzalone, giving him the week to feel ready for the future, but also stressing caution due to the playoff game looming after this weekend.

Meanwhile, linebacker Jack Campbell has stepped up in Anzalone’s absence, taking on an every-down role and leading the defensive huddle. Ben Niemann has also seen more playing time beside Jack Campbell.

In addition, veteran linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin returned to action last week after missing about two months. Trevor Nowaske has continued to fill the SAM linebacker role with Derrick Barnes on injured reserve.

At Friday’s practice, three players were absent, including running backs Craig Reynolds and David Montgomery, along with veteran cornerback Emmanuel Moseley.

Reynolds, who played a significant role in last week’s game, had been present at practice all week. Montgomery, recovering from a knee injury, has missed the last two games, while Moseley has been sidelined due to illness and has missed all practices this week.
