The Lions’ All-Pro wide receiver is embracing a derogatory comment made by Steelers’ George Pickens.
The Detroit Lions’ offense continues to impress, closing out the season with a dominant 31-9 win over their division rival Minnesota Vikings in Week 18. This victory helped them secure the top NFC seed and a first-round bye in the playoffs. Despite the success, wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown couldn’t resist taking a playful jab at Pittsburgh Steelers’ receiver George Pickens.
Earlier in the season, Pickens took an unsolicited swipe at St. Brown, calling the All-Pro a “slot merchant” who owes his success to the Lions’ system, which feeds him the ball. While this notion is absurd, St. Brown decided to have fun with it by launching a “Slot Merchant” merchandise line on his website, according to Bleacher Report.
Now, fans can support the Lions’ wideout—or poke fun at the Steelers’ receiver—by purchasing St. Brown’s Slot Merchant gear, which includes T-shirts and hoodies.
The idea that St. Brown is only successful due to the Lions’ offensive system is nonsensical. The three-time Pro Bowler just completed his third consecutive season with over 100 receptions and 1,000 receiving yards, finishing 2024 with 115 catches for 1,263 yards and 12 touchdowns. Last year, he posted 119 receptions for 1,515 yards and 10 touchdowns.
The Lions are thriving, and Amon-Ra St. Brown is having fun with the situation.
Let’s contrast those numbers with Pickens’ career stats in Pittsburgh. This season, the third-year receiver recorded 59 catches for 900 yards and three touchdowns. His best season came last year when he posted 63 receptions for 1,140 yards and five touchdowns—career highs.
To make matters worse, the Steelers entered the playoffs with four consecutive losses, and Pickens’ dismal performance in Week 18 hurt the team. He dropped three passes and ended with just one reception on six targets for zero yards. Not exactly a clutch showing.
While running back Jahmyr Gibbs carried the Lions in their season finale, scoring four touchdowns and setting a franchise record for single-season TDs, St. Brown remained a consistent contributor, hauling in six catches on seven targets for 77 yards.
The Lions ended the season on a high note, winning three straight games and 14 of their last 15. With the win, Detroit clinched the NFC North, the top seed, and a bye. This marks the Lions’ second consecutive division title, with the team improving from last year’s 12-5 record to a remarkable 15-2 finish in 2024.
