Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson speaks to the media before OTAs at the team’s headquarters in Allen Park on Thursday, June 1, 2023.
Ben Johnson is expected to be highly selective again when evaluating head coaching opportunities this offseason, but one unexpected position may catch his interest.
In a column on Thursday, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that some NFL insiders believe Johnson is “intrigued” by the Jacksonville Jaguars’ head coaching vacancy. However, Johnson might prefer a general manager other than Trent Baalke.
The Jaguars parted ways with Doug Pederson after a 4-13 finish this season, and they have a 25-year-old franchise quarterback in Trevor Lawrence, which could be appealing to Johnson.
It shocked many when the Jaguars decided to retain Baalke after firing Pederson. Baalke has earned a reputation as a challenging figure to work with. One unnamed head coach candidate mentioned that they would not consider the Jacksonville job if Baalke remained GM. It’s possible Johnson shares the same sentiment.
In his second season as the Lions’ offensive coordinator, Johnson has helped Detroit rank No. 1 in points and No. 2 in yards this season. Last year, they finished No. 5 in points and No. 3 in yards. With his stock soaring, Johnson could potentially stay with the Lions for another year.
It seems nearly every team with a head coaching vacancy will offer Johnson an interview. He is reportedly also interested in a different team with a promising young quarterback.
