Detroit confirms offensive guard’s unavailability for the divisional round due to injury.
The Detroit Lions will enter the postseason without a key part of their offensive line.
Starting right guard Kevin Zeitler has been ruled out for Saturday night’s divisional-round matchup against the Washington Commanders.
Zeitler sustained a hamstring injury during the Week 18 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. The veteran lineman did not practice this week, focusing on rest and treatment instead.
Head coach Dan Campbell made his backup plan clear in case Zeitler couldn’t play.
The Lions plan to start rookie Christian Mahogany in his place, while relying on Kayode Awosika’s experience to provide additional depth.
If the Lions follow through with this plan, Mahogany will make the second start of his career. His first start came in Week 16, filling in on the left side for Graham Glasgow against the Chicago Bears.
In that game, Mahogany allowed zero sacks and just one pressure, excelling in run blocking over 65 snaps.
His performance earned praise both internally and externally, with Pro Football Focus ranking him ninth among guards in pass blocking that week.
“Yeah, we felt that was a strong outing for him, and it’s enough to — if it comes to that — give him another shot,” Campbell said Thursday.
“That said, we’ve got (Awosika) Yode, too. He’s played snaps for us, including in the playoffs, and we trust him. We feel good about our options.”
The Lions also ruled out defensive lineman Pat O’Connor due to a calf injury.
Rookie cornerback Ennis Rakestraw, still within his 21-day injured reserve return window, is listed as questionable with a hamstring injury and illness.
Meanwhile, cornerback Terrion Arnold, running back David Montgomery, and left tackle Taylor Decker show no injury concerns.
Arnold and Montgomery practiced fully all week and are set to play in the divisional round.
Decker is ready to play after missing Wednesday’s practice for personal reasons. The left tackle was excused to be with his wife as they welcomed a new child.
The Commanders will be without linebacker Jordan Magee (hamstring). Additionally, linebacker Mykal Walker (illness) and tight end Colson Yankoff (hamstring) are listed as questionable.
Bobby Wagner is set to play after practicing at the end of the week. The veteran linebacker enters the weekend with no injury designation.
