The Detroit Lions will begin their postseason without a key member of their offensive line.
Starting right guard Kevin Zeitler has been ruled out for Saturday’s divisional-round game against the Washington Commanders. Zeitler sustained a hamstring injury during the Week 18 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. The veteran lineman did not participate in practice this week, focusing solely on treatment and rest.
Head coach Dan Campbell was clear about his plans in case Zeitler couldn’t play. He confirmed that rookie Christian Mahogany would start in his place, while also expressing confidence in Kayode Awosika’s depth experience as an option.
If the Lions follow through with that plan, Mahogany will make his second career start. His first start came on the left side in relief of Graham Glasgow during Week 16 against the Chicago Bears.
Mahogany allowed no sacks and just one pressure in that game, performing well in the run-blocking game across 65 snaps. His effort earned praise within the team and from outsiders, with Pro Football Focus ranking him ninth among guards for pass blocking that week.
“We thought that was a strong performance from him, and if it comes to that, we’re confident in giving him a shot,” Campbell said Thursday. “But we also have (Awosika) Yode, who’s played in playoff games for us and whom we trust. So, we feel we’re in a good spot.”
The Lions also ruled out veteran defensive lineman Pat O’Connor due to a calf issue. Rookie cornerback Ennis Rakestraw, still in his 21-day return window from injured reserve, is listed as questionable due to a hamstring injury and illness.
There is no concern about cornerback Terrion Arnold, running back David Montgomery, or left tackle Taylor Decker. Arnold and Montgomery were full participants throughout the week and are expected to play in the divisional round.
Decker is available after missing Wednesday’s practice due to a personal matter. He had been absent as he and his wife welcomed a new baby.
The Commanders will be without linebacker Jordan Magee (hamstring). Linebacker Mykal Walker (illness) and tight end Colson Yankoff (hamstring) are listed as questionable.
Bobby Wagner is good to go after returning to practice late in the week and enters the weekend with no injury designation.
