Last season, the Detroit Lions saw their Super Bowl hopes dashed after losing a 17-point second-half lead to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game.
That missed opportunity denied them their first-ever Super Bowl appearance.
This year, the Lions are determined to overcome past mistakes as they begin their playoff run.
Ahead of their Divisional Round matchup against the Washington Commanders, star running back Jahmyr Gibbs expressed confidence in the team’s progress.
When asked on January 15 what sets this year’s team apart, Gibbs responded, “We’re a better team than we were last year.”
The statistics back up his claim. While the Lions had a strong offense last season, they’ve improved to become the league’s best in 2024, averaging 6.1 more points per game.
Their defense has also made significant strides, going from one of the bottom 10 teams in points allowed in 2023 (23.2 points per game) to ranking seventh this season, conceding just 20.1 points per game.
Much of the offensive growth comes from players already on the roster.
Wide receiver Jameson Williams delivered a breakout performance in his third season, surpassing 1,000 yards after struggling in his first two years. Meanwhile, Gibbs emerged as a star in his second season.
The addition of veteran guard Kevin Zeitler has also strengthened an already impressive offensive line.
Defensively, young players have stepped up in a big way.
Brian Branch earned a Pro Bowl selection in just his second year, while Kerby Joseph led the league in interceptions, securing a First Team All-Pro nod in his third season.
The additions of cornerbacks Terrion Arnold and Carlton Davis have bolstered the secondary, even in the absence of the team’s top defensive player.
As the Lions prepare for their first playoff game of the season, these improvements give them a strong chance to exceed last year’s performance. With a more balanced and effective team, Detroit is hopeful they can finally reach their long-awaitedSuper Bowl.
