Dan Campbell’s Plan for Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery Takes an Unexpected Turn”

The Detroit Lions are gearing up for their divisional round game against the Washington Commanders on Saturday, and head coach Dan Campbell has a distinctive plan for how he will use his two star running backs, Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery.

Gibbs and Montgomery have formed one of the best running back duos in the NFL, but their partnership was disrupted in Week 15 when Montgomery suffered what was initially feared to be a season-ending MCL injury.

Fortunately, further testing revealed that Montgomery would be able to return for the postseason, and he will be available when the Lions take on the Commanders.

In Montgomery’s absence, Gibbs stepped up significantly, accumulating at least 150 total yards in each of Detroit’s last three games.

Although Montgomery is set to make his comeback, Campbell is expected to keep Gibbs as the lead running back for the playoff game against the Commanders.

Jeremy Fowler shared on “Sportscenter” that most sources he spoke with believe Gibbs will remain the starting running back due to his impressive performance during Montgomery’s absence.

While Montgomery will still have a role in the offense, it’s expected that the Commanders will primarily prepare for Gibbs, given his recent strong play.

Even though Gibbs and Montgomery have been an excellent duo, Campbell and the Lions recognize Gibbs’ outstanding contributions during Montgomery’s time off.

Therefore, they will continue to rely on Gibbs while gradually reintegrating Montgomery back into the mix after his extended break from the field.

However, should either running back find a rhythm during the game, Campbell is likely to lean heavily on the “hot hand” approach, making adjustments as necessary to maximize the team’s chances of advancing.

The Lions are determined to extend their postseason run, and the outcome of this game will determine whether they secure a spot in the NFC Championship.

The highly anticipated matchup between the Lions and the Commanders is scheduled for Saturday, January 18, at 8 p.m. EST. The winner will move on to compete in the NFC Championship Game, making this a critical contest for both teams.
