Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby has heard all the admiration for Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell and feels a bit frustrated seeing his hometown team find so much success.
On this week’s “Good Morning Football,” Crosby, a skilled defensive lineman, talked about the 15-2 Lions and what he’s been hearing from former teammates.
“It kind of bothers me because I had to wait my whole childhood for them to be good, and now that I’m in the league, they’re Super Bowl contenders,” Crosby said. “Selfishly, I’m kind of mad at them. Honestly, seeing what Dan Campbell has built, hearing what those guys say about him — Amik Robertson, my former teammate, is out there. Pat O’Connor, my teammate from Eastern Michigan, is with Detroit. Everyone says the same thing.
“They say, ‘I hope you get to be in that locker room with coach Campbell one day.’ He’s amazing. They say he’d literally do anything for the players. He lives by that,” Crosby added. “The way he acts in the locker room after games and in interviews, that’s who he is. People joked about him initially, with the kneecaps comments and all that, but it’s amazing to see what he’s done for Detroit.”
After years of rebuilding, Detroit sports teams are enjoying a resurgence. The Tigers made it to the MLB playoffs, and both the Pistons and Red Wings have had positive seasons recently.
“My mom was born and raised in Detroit, so were my aunts and uncles. I grew up in Michigan, just down the street. It’s amazing to see for the city because it’s been a long time,” Crosby said. “The Lions haven’t won in forever, and now the Pistons are winning, the Red Wings are winning, and I’m watching from afar. Even the Tigers are back on track. I’m like, ‘Damn, now I’m in Vegas.’ My whole childhood was rough.”
Amik Robertson reflects on his time with the Raiders
Ahead of Detroit’s first playoff game this season, cornerback Amik Robertson shared fond memories of his time with the Raiders.
“I had a great time with the Raiders, no complaints about them. But I think they had a lot of guys with that killer mentality,” Robertson explained. “Here, it’s a lot more guys with a mentality that they play at a high level, always around the ball, paying attention to detail, and they play hard-nosed Lions football. I just felt like I fit right in. That’s my type of play.”
The talented Detroit defensive back also mentioned that some of his former teammates are proud of him and the team’s success.
“I hear from some of my old teammates and coaches. They see us doing well,” Robertson said. “Some players are happy for me, others are rooting for us. Some former teammates are not only cheering for me but for the team as a whole, because they understand where this organization started from and how they’ve built themselves up from the ground up.
