Dan Campbell acknowledges the inevitability of Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn’s departures.

With their availability to conduct in-person interviews now that the Detroit Lions’ season has ended following their loss to the Washington Commanders, Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn could both secure head coaching positions by the end of the week.

When asked last week about how the initial round of Zoom interviews for his coordinators went, head coach Dan Campbell gave the perfect response.

“Well, why would I want to know that? You think I want them to leave?” Campbell said, grinning before growing serious. “Yeah, I’ve got a sense of how they’re doing. I haven’t rushed in there asking if they’re leaving yet. I didn’t do that. At some point today (Monday), I’ll talk to them about what happened.”

Johnson and Glenn have certainly kept Campbell informed as they’ve gone through head coaching interviews during the team’s playoff bye week. Now, with the process moving forward, Campbell likely has a sense of whether he’ll need to find replacements for either or both.

Dan Campbell faces the inevitability of losing Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn Speaking to reporters on Monday, Campbell expressed his anticipation for what’s to come with Johnson and Glenn.

“I would expect to lose both, but I haven’t been told anything,” Campbell said. “I have a feeling, but I’m prepared to lose both.”

On the topic of potential replacements for Johnson, Campbell emphasized quarterback Jared Goff’s involvement in the search. This was expected, given Campbell’s desire to maintain continuity in the offense and the close working relationship Goff has had with Johnson since his promotion to offensive coordinator.

Campbell also acknowledged the importance of considering internal candidates to replace both Johnson and Glenn in order to preserve the team’s established identity.

“We’ve got guys on staff who are more than qualified to excel in these roles, but that doesn’t mean I’m not looking outside as well,” Campbell said. “I want something as close to what we’ve been as possible. We won’t lose what we are and our identity. We’ll remain true to who we are.”

Success brings the inevitable cost of having your staff targeted by other teams looking to replicate your success. Campbell has always understood the likelihood of losing Johnson and Glenn, and that time has arrived unless something unexpected happens.
