Dan Campbell emphasized basic, no-nonsense qualifications for the Lions’ next coordinators.
The Detroit Lions’ season came to an end in the NFC divisional round over the weekend.
Although the team fell short of their ultimate goal of reaching the Super Bowl, they had a highly successful regular season, setting a franchise record with 15 wins and finishing with the best record in their conference.
Under offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, Detroit boasted the second-best offense in the league, while defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn led a unit ranked seventh in scoring defense.
Given the team’s achievements over the past two seasons, it’s no surprise that both coordinators are top candidates for head coaching roles.
Even a loss to one of the best rookies in NFL history hasn’t changed that narrative.
Head coach Dan Campbell, recognizing their value, is already bracing for the possibility of losing both coordinators.
Campbell stated that while he hasn’t received any definitive news, he’s preparing for their departures by considering internal candidates as well as exploring outside options for replacements.
He emphasized the importance of finding the right fit for the team’s culture and philosophy.
“I want someone who will keep us as close to what we’ve been as possible,” said Campbell. “We can’t lose our identity or what we stand for.”
Campbell added, “We’re staying true to who we are, and if that doesn’t sit well with you, this isn’t the right job for you.”
