Dallas cowboys

The Cowboys’ NFC Championship drought persists, with the Commanders’ win creating an unwelcome streak for Dallas.

Even when the Dallas Cowboys are not in the NFL playoffs, they remain part of the playoff narrative.

This year, the Cowboys failed to make the NFC playoffs, dashing their hopes of ending a lengthy NFC championship game drought.

The Washington Commanders, a division rival in the NFC East, held the longest drought in making an NFC championship game, but they ended that on Saturday by defeating the Detroit Lions 45-31 in the NFC divisional round.

This scenario suggests that it may not be as difficult for the Cowboys to catch up with their competitors after all.

The last time Dallas reached the NFC championship game was during the 1995 NFL season, specifically on January 14, 1996, when the Cowboys defeated the Green Bay Packers to reach Super Bowl 30. They later won the Super Bowl, beating the Pittsburgh Steelers, securing their fifth and final championship.

Now, with Dallas searching for a new head coach to help them return to that level, there is added pressure not only to secure another Super Bowl ring but also to get back to the championship stage once again.

When was the last time the Cowboys made it to the NFC championship game?

The Cowboys’ last NFC championship game appearance was on January 14, 1996. That season, they finished with a solid 12-4 record, earning a first-round bye. In the divisional round, they defeated their bitter rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles.

They then won the NFC championship by overcoming the Packers, and later triumphed over the Steelers in Super Bowl 30, with a 27-17 victory.

When did the Cowboys last make the playoffs?

Although the Cowboys missed the playoffs in 2024, they did make it in 2023. Unfortunately, they were eliminated in the wild-card round by the Green Bay Packers.
