Following the defeat to the Commanders, Amon-Ra St. Brown sent a message to Dan Campbell.
The Detroit Lions still believe their roster has the right mix of talent to win a Super Bowl.
After their surprising loss to the Washington Commanders, the Lions’ roster was left reeling. Wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown sent a text to head coach Dan Campbell at 4 a.m. following their 45-31 defeat in the Divisional Round of the playoffs.
“I received a message from Amon-Ra at four in the morning yesterday,” Campbell shared at his season-ending press conference. “I know it bothers the guys who care, and they’re the right ones, our guys for a reason. That’s what gives me hope and lets me know we’ll only get better. We’ll return stronger, we’ll learn from this, and it just adds more fuel to the fire.”
Detroit’s fourth-year head coach acknowledged the team fell short of their objectives, even though they were seriously considered as Super Bowl contenders.
“I keep coming back to this: when you have the right people and you’re built the right way, failure only makes you stronger. It makes you better. I truly believe that, and unfortunately, I’ve experienced a lot of that. But man, I’m thankful because it fuels your hunger,” Campbell said. “The toughest part is when you achieve success at a certain level, and you have to reload to do it again. That’s why what New England accomplished for so many years under Bill Belichick is incredible. But given where we are, we had those goals, and we fell short.”
The Lions’ head coach also admitted that the loss deeply affected him, and he would use it as motivation for next season.
“We met two of those goals this year and even exceeded where we were last year, but we didn’t progress further, and that’s disappointing,” Campbell reflected. “But it also eats at me, and that drives and motivates me.”
