Lions Quickly Re-Sign Their First Free Agent to Kick Off 2025 Offseason

The Detroit Lions and their fans are now focused on the offseason after a 45-31 loss to the Washington Commanders in the divisional round of the playoffs.

Detroit, once considered a Super Bowl contender, was unable to reach the NFC Championship, falling short at home as the No. 1 seed. Now, the Lions aim to regroup and work toward returning to the playoffs in 2025.

On Monday, Detroit began shaping its 90-man roster for the offseason by signing 11 practice squad players to reserve/future contracts. Along with those moves, the Lions also re-signed safety Morice Norris.

The rookie cornerback couldn’t sign a reserve/futures contract because he was on the active roster but would have been designated an ERFA (exclusive rights free agent).

Norris, 24, played 22 defensive snaps in the playoff loss to the Commanders. He replaced Ifeatu Melifonwu, who suffered a hamstring injury and did not return to the game.

The former Fresno State standout recorded three combined tackles and allowed two completions in his limited action. Prior to the playoff game, the 5-foot-11 cornerback had only appeared on special teams during the last two regular season games against the San Francisco 49ers and Minnesota Vikings.

Detroit signed Norris as an undrafted free agent following the 2024 NFL Draft. He went through training camp with the Lions but did not make the final roster, as he was waived with an injury and placed on injured reserve in August.

Afterward, the Lions granted Norris an injury settlement. However, they re-signed him to the practice squad in late September and moved him to the active roster in late December.

The rookie defensive back was waived on New Year’s Eve but returned to the practice squad on January 2 before being promoted to the active roster two days later. Detroit will see if Norris can improve from his limited playing time and become a reliable depth option for the secondary in 2025.
