Lions Waste No Time, Re-Signing First Free Agent to Begin the 2025 Offseason.

The Lions re-signed rookie safety Morice Norris after their postseason defeat to the Washington Commanders.

The Detroit Lions, alongside their fans, are turning their attention to the offseason following a 45-31 loss to the Washington Commanders in the divisional round of the playoffs.

Considered among the top contenders for the Super Bowl, the No. 1 seed in the NFC was unable to make it past their home game. Now, the Lions must regroup and work on returning to the playoffs in 2025.

On Monday, the Lions began assembling their 90-man roster for the offseason, signing 11 players from the practice squad to reserve/future contracts. Additionally, the Lions re-signed safety Morice Norris.

The rookie cornerback couldn’t sign a reserve/future deal due to being on the active roster but would’ve been assigned an ERFA (exclusive rights free agent) designation.

The 24-year-old Norris surprisingly played 22 defensive snaps during the Commanders game on Saturday. He replaced Ifeatu Melifonwu, who suffered a hamstring injury and did not return.

The former Fresno State player tallied three combined tackles, allowing two completions during his limited playing time. Before the playoff game, the 5-foot-11 cornerback only appeared on special teams during the Lions’ final two regular season games against the San Francisco 49ers and Minnesota Vikings.

Detroit signed Norris as an undrafted free agent after the 2024 NFL Draft. He attended training camp with the Lions but didn’t make it through preseason, as he was waived with an injury and placed on injured reserve in August.

However, the Lions soon provided him an injury settlement. They re-signed Norris to the practice squad in late September and promoted him to the active roster in late December.

The rookie defensive back was waived on New Year’s Eve, but the Lions added him back to the practice squad on Jan. 2 and moved him to the active roster two days later. Detroit will monitor Norris’s development from his limited action this season, hoping he can become a valuable depth piece in the secondary for 2025.
