Former Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford might be a good fit for a rival NFC North team, according to one NFL analyst.
The NFC North is looking like a serious challenge for the Detroit Lions next season, especially with former Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson now the head coach of the Chicago Bears. Now, there’s the possibility of an ex-Lions quarterback joining a rival in the division.
It feels like seeing your exes with people you really can’t stand. One NFL analyst believes former Lions and current Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford could end up with a long-time division rival.
Former Detroit Lions QB Could Join the Vikings
In January 19 piece for FanSided, Wynston Wilcox suggests that Stafford’s trade value is currently high, making it a good time for the Los Angeles Rams to trade him to a team in need of a seasoned quarterback.
Wilcox identifies the Minnesota Vikings as a prime landing spot for Stafford. While the Vikings already have several quarterbacks on their roster, including Sam Darnold, Daniel Jones, and J.J. McCarthy, that might not stop them from adding Stafford.
In the article, Wilcox notes that despite the Vikings’ quarterback options, “If they want a new face, Stafford could be a great addition.”
“Stafford would be an upgrade from Cooper Kupp or Puka Nacua as the No. 1 option to Justin Jefferson,” Wilcox explained. “The Vikings can’t afford to fall back with McCarthy or Jones under center.”
Wilcox adds that Stafford could give McCarthy more time to adjust to the NFL while keeping the Vikings competitive for the next few seasons until Stafford retires.
“If the Vikings want to contend and grow, they need a quarterback like Stafford,” Wilcox stated.
“Darnold, despite his solid regular season, wasn’t prepared for the playoff pressure,” he added, referring to Darnold’s struggles in the postseason.
“Kevin O’Connell seems to favor McCarthy or Jones as the starter,” Wilcox noted. “But if he’s aiming for a championship in the next couple of years, Stafford could be the immediate solution instead of Darnold.”
Wilcox also mentions the Pittsburgh Steelers and Las Vegas Raiders as potential destinations for Stafford.
NFL Analyst Proposes Bold Trade for Stafford
Nick Wright also weighed in on where he thinks Stafford should go. On January 21, during “First Things First,” Wright suggested a quarterback trade sending Stafford to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for Tua Tagovailoa. This trade would be a direct swap with no additional players or picks involved.
“I’ve got a quarterback trade idea where I’d call Miami and propose Stafford for Tua,” Wright said during the broadcast. “If you’re Miami, this would mean admitting defeat on Tua and going all in for now.”
