The Detroit Lions secured the NFC’s top seed in 2024 with a stellar 15-2 record but suffered a disappointing end to their season with a divisional round loss to the Washington Commanders.
Now, the team faces uncertainty as they must replace both their offensive and defensive coordinators.
Detroit boasted one of the league’s strongest coaching staffs, with Ben Johnson leading the offense and Aaron Glenn overseeing the defense.
However, their success came at a cost, as both coordinators departed for head coaching jobs elsewhere.
Head coach Dan Campbell has now turned his attention to rebuilding his staff. While replacing Johnson and Glenn presents a major challenge, Campbell is tackling it head-on.
According to Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz on X, Campbell has reached out to Larry Foote as a potential defensive coordinator candidate.
Foote recently completed his third season as the inside linebackers coach and pass game coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
He joined the team in 2019 as the outside linebackers coach.
Foote is perhaps best known for his playing days as a linebacker with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he spent 11 seasons and won two Super Bowls.
He later earned a third ring in 2020 as a coach with the Tom Brady-led Buccaneers.
Under Campbell’s leadership, the Lions have become one of the NFL’s top teams, winning consecutive division titles and making the NFC
Championship Game last season. But with Johnson now coaching the Chicago Bears and Glenn taking over the New York Jets, Campbell has significant gaps to fill.
Unfortunately, the departures may not stop there. Other coaches could follow Johnson and Glenn to their new teams.
Glenn might bring quarterbacks coach Mark Brunell to New York and could potentially take linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard as well.
Those departures would eliminate potential candidates for offensive and defensive coordinator roles in Detroit, complicating the team’s ability to promote internally.
Johnson, reportedly already the seventh-highest-paid head coach in the league after joining the Bears, might also target Lions staff members.
Additionally, Patriots coach Mike Vrabel could recruit Detroit’s defensive line coach, Terrell Williams.
