The Bucs were one of just two teams to defeat the Lions during the regular season, holding them to a season-low 16 points.
That performance clearly made an impression on Detroit head coach Dan Campbell.
It might explain why the Lions are now looking to bring in both of the Bucs’ co-defensive coordinators.
Kacy Rodgers has accepted a position as the Lions’ defensive line coach, while Larry Foote is set to interview for their open defensive coordinator role.
Although the Bucs’ defense had its share of struggles this season, neither Rodgers nor Foote could be blamed for those issues.
Rodgers’ defensive line stood out, with second-year defensive tackle Calijah Kancey leading the team in sacks (7.5) despite missing the season’s first month due to a calf injury. Vita Vea also delivered an impressive season, contributing seven sacks.
During the Bucs’ Week 2 win against Detroit, the Lions held a 463-216 edge in total yardage but managed just 1-of-6 in red zone touchdown efficiency.
The Bucs had offered new contracts to both Rodgers and Foote for 2025. Rodgers, however, interviewed with the Packers and Lions before deciding to join Detroit.
Rodgers has worked with Bucs head coach Todd Bowles for years, dating back to their days as assistant coaches under Bill Parcells with the Cowboys. Rodgers also served as Bowles’ defensive coordinator for four seasons with the Jets.
Foote, who spent 13 seasons as an NFL linebacker, primarily with the Steelers, also played for the Lions in 2009.
Detroit is currently rebuilding its staff under Campbell. Rodgers will take over as defensive line coach, replacing Terrell Williams, who left to become the Patriots’ defensive coordinator.
Bowles has always been the primary defensive play-caller, but in Detroit, Foote could have an opportunity to grow into a bigger role.
Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn departed to become the Jets’ head coach, while offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is now the Bears’ head coach.
Foote was part of Bruce Arians’ staff in Arizona, alongside Bucs defensive backs coach Kevin Ross and safeties coach Nick Rapone.
