Lions GM: Goff Still in His ‘Prime,’ No Signs of Decline Expected Despite Changes

Just a week has passed since the Detroit Lions’ unexpected loss to the Washington Commanders in the NFC divisional round, but general manager Brad Holmes and the Lions’ organization are already focused on moving forward.

The team has experienced significant changes, with offensive coordinator Ben Johnson joining the Chicago Bears, defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn heading to the New York Jets, and defensive line coach Terrell Williams signing with the New England Patriots.

However, the Lions are reportedly planning to hire Kacy Rodgers from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as their new defensive coordinator.

During his end-of-season press conference, Holmes stated, “There’s literally nothing else to do but pick yourself up and get back to work.”

No Concerns About Jared Goff’s Play

Despite the coaching changes, Holmes remains confident in quarterback Jared Goff’s ability to maintain his high level of performance without Johnson.

Holmes noted that Goff is still on an upward trajectory, saying, “I think the guy’s in his prime. He’s gotten better and better every year.

And when I say prime, I think, like, just entering it.” Holmes also expressed trust in head coach Dan Campbell to keep Goff in a position to thrive.

Under Johnson’s guidance, Goff delivered an exceptional season in 2024, recording over 4,600 passing yards, 37 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, with a 72% completion rate. His stellar performance earned him a spot as an MVP finalist and his fourth Pro Bowl appearance

Campbell’s Trust in Goff’s Input

Holmes highlighted that Campbell will work closely with Goff to identify the best candidate for the offensive coordinator role.

Campbell emphasized the value of Goff’s perspective, saying, “What he says is going to mean a lot to me,” as they search for Johnson’s replacement.

Despite the playoff disappointment, Holmes remains optimistic about the Lions’ Super Bowl aspirations.

He believes the team is “very close” to achieving that goal and is already preparing for the 2025 season.

Holmes stated, “I do think that we’re very close… nothing’s going to alter what our approach has been in terms of trying to continue to improve and keep building.”
