Detroit Lions

Packers’ top coaching target chooses to sign with their fiercest rival instead.

The Green Bay Packers are in search of a new defensive line coach after parting ways with Jason Rebrovich.

Green Bay quickly began the search, interviewing Eric Washington (former Chicago Bears defensive coordinator), Aaron Whitecotton (New York Jets defensive line coach), and Kacy Rodgers (Tampa Bay Buccaneers run game coordinator and defensive line coach).

However, the Packers will need to revise their interview plans as Rodgers will no longer be an option.

Packers News: Kacy Rodgers Heads to Detroit Lions’ Coaching Staff

On Thursday, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that Rodgers is set to join the Detroit Lions as their defensive line coach.

According to Fowler, Rodgers will replace Terrell Williams, who recently accepted the defensive coordinator role with the New England Patriots.

Rodgers would have been a valuable addition to the Packers’ staff, given his success with Tampa Bay’s defense.

This season, the Buccaneers ranked fourth in the NFL in run defense, allowing just 97.8 rushing yards per game.

Additionally, Tampa Bay’s defense finished seventh in sacks (46), one ahead of Green Bay’s 10th-ranked unit (45 sacks).

Rodgers spent six seasons as the Buccaneers’ defensive line coach and three as their run-game coordinator.

The Packers already have a run-game coordinator in Anthony Campanile, who also serves as their linebackers coach.

Detroit acted quickly to fill the vacancy, dealing a minor setback to Green Bay. Still, the Packers have Washington and Whitecotton as viable candidates for the defensive line coach role.

Green Bay must act fast, as remaining head coaching hires across the league will result in new staffs being assembled, which could impact the Packers’ options.
