Ex-Lions QB Matthew Stafford’s Wife Shares His Upcoming Career Plans

Former Detroit Lions and current Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is contemplating his next move, according to his wife Kelly.

Following the Rams’ 28-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, January 19, Stafford has been at the center of retirement and trade speculation.

With the Rams’ season officially over and the postseason underway, the franchise quarterback is focused on what comes next.

After the Eagles game, Stafford reached out to his wife, Kelly, as she revealed in a January 22 episode of her “Timeout” podcast.

Stafford, who will turn 37 on February 7, is one of the older quarterbacks in the league.

Kelly shared on “Timeout” that she would find it difficult if Matthew chose to retire this season and that she’s not influencing his decision.

“That will be his choice,” she explained, noting that he’s giving serious thought to this decision. “I’m not going to pressure him. I’m just here to listen.”

She added that after the game, “He texted me saying, ‘We’ll talk about it.’ I told him, ‘You talk, I’ll listen.’

He wants to make it a joint decision, but it has to be his. I don’t want him to resent me. It has to be his decision alone.”

As for the timeline, Kelly mentioned that Matthew will “take time” to make up his mind. She added that he’ll need to decide soon because the Rams need clarity.

When reporters asked Stafford about his future with the Rams and the NFL after the Eagles game, he said he needs to “take some time to think about it.”

“I feel like I was playing some pretty good ball,” he added. When asked if he still had football left in him, he responded, “Sure feels like it.”

During a press conference on Tuesday, January 22, Rams head coach Sean McVay also discussed Stafford’s future. He said, “We’ll talk about all those things at the right time. I know he’s playing really good football.”

“Obviously, I love him and love working with him,” McVay continued, according to ESPN. “What he’s meant to our football team has been immeasurable in a positive way.

We’ll keep looking at… the quarterback is always the first thing in mind as you plan for the future.”

McVay also expressed that Stafford is still “playing really good football.”

The coach praised Stafford for performing exceptionally well in high-pressure moments, particularly during playoff games.

It’s one thing to be a good quarterback, but excelling in high-stakes situations, like playoffs, takes a quarterback to another level.

In the Eagles game, Stafford’s 161 passing yards in the fourth quarter were his highest of the season, proving his ability to shine under pressure.
