Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels turned what could have been a wholesome moment into an opportunity to playfully troll a peer.
Daniels led the Commanders to a shocking upset over the Detroit Lions in last Saturday’s NFC Divisional Round game at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan.
After the Commanders’ 45-31 victory, Daniels swapped jerseys with Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold.
Before handing over the jersey, the Commanders rookie apparently wrote a note on it.
Former UCF football player and popular YouTuber Donald De La Haye, known as Deestroying, revealed the message during a recent episode of his “Kickin’ it with Dee” podcast.
“You know what’s funny? I’m tight with Terrion Arnold, a DB for the Lions, and he told me he swapped jerseys with Jayden Daniels after the game.
At the bottom of the jersey, Jayden wrote, ‘Cancun on 3! 1, 2, 3,’” De La Haye shared.
Daniels’ message seemingly referenced a famous line from former Los Angeles Lakers guard Nick Van Exel during the 1998 NBA Playoffs.
Facing a 3-0 deficit to the Utah Jazz in the Western Conference Finals, Van Exel jokingly used a similar chant, suggesting the Lakers were destined for an early vacation in Cancun.
If Daniels did write that note, it was likely meant as a lighthearted joke. Both players were first-round picks in the 2024 NFL Draft and share a connection.
They even shared a touching moment when one of Arnold’s fellow Lions cornerbacks suffered a serious injury.
Daniels shined in the victory, completing 22 of 31 passes for 299 yards and two touchdowns.
