Jerry Jones Explains Why Brian Schottenheimer Was a better Choice Over Lions’ Coordinators

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has faced criticism for the way he handled the hiring process for new head coach Brian Schottenheimer.

From failing to reach an extension agreement with Mike McCarthy, waiting until a week after the regular season to part ways with him, to not interviewing top head coaching candidates like Ben Johnson or Aaron Glenn, Jones could have made better decisions during the hiring period.

Johnson and Glenn were highly regarded as two of the top coaching candidates this cycle, especially after leading the Detroit Lions to significant success over the past two years.

However, Jones reportedly did not see either Lions coordinator as prime candidates for the Cowboys’ head coach job, according to Jon Machota of The Athletic.

Machota’s report stated that Jones favored Schottenheimer because of his familiarity with the Cowboys’ situation, having served as the team’s offensive coordinator for the past two seasons. Jones also believes Schottenheimer possesses the same qualities as both Johnson and Glenn.

Throughout the hiring cycle, the Cowboys only interviewed Schottenheimer, Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, Seattle Seahawks assistant Leslie Frazier, and former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh before settling on Schottenheimer.

There was also a brief conversation with former Cowboys star and current Colorado Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders, but Sanders was never considered a serious candidate.

Schottenheimer, with over a decade more coaching experience than both Johnson and Glenn, has held the offensive coordinator role for four different teams.

While this doesn’t necessarily imply Schottenheimer is more skilled or qualified than either Johnson or Glenn, it does indicate he brings a wealth of experience as he steps into the lead role with one of the NFL’s most prominent teams.
