The Detroit Lions were one of the top teams in the NFL this season, but they are learning that success often comes with consequences.
The Lions have lost both coordinators, with Ben Johnson becoming head coach of the Chicago Bears and Aaron Glenn taking the head coaching position with the New York Jets. Several other coaches have moved on to bigger roles in this year’s coaching cycle as well.
Now, it seems that Lions passing game coordinator Tanner Engstrand might be the next to leave after he was overlooked for offensive coordinator job last week.
While nothing has been confirmed, Engstrand could reunite with a familiar figure to secure the promotion he didn’t receive with Detroit.
Aaron Glenn, New York Jets Considering Tanner Engstrand for Offensive Coordinator Job
NFL insider Josina Anderson reported that Engstrand was in significant talks for the Jets’ offensive coordinator role on Tuesday.
Aaron Wilson of KPRC2-TV in Houston also stated that “many league sources have shown confidence” that the 42-year-old will land the position.
Engstrand has been a vital part of the Lions’ staff since 2020, spending the past two seasons as the passing game coordinator.
Detroit’s offense has flourished with Engstrand, leading the NFL with 8,875 yards and ranking second with 69 touchdown passes and a 105.0 passer rating over the last two seasons.
It would have made sense for him to be promoted to offensive coordinator after Johnson’s departure.
However, the Lions decided to hire John Morton, the passing game coordinator for the Denver Broncos, leaving Engstrand seeking a similar promotion elsewhere.
With Glenn having served as Detroit’s defensive coordinator for the past four years, it’s no surprise that he might want Engstrand for his New York staff,
despite competition. Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz reported that Lions quarterback coach Mark Brunell was also a candidate for the OC position, along with Los Angeles Rams tight end coach Nick Caley and Las Vegas Raiders offensive coordinator Scott Turner as potential options.
For now, it seems Engstrand has a strong chance of securing the Jets’ OC job, which could result in another key departure from the Lions’ coaching staff this offseason.
