Former Green Bay Packers standout Za’Darius Smith has had a wild ride through the NFC North. After signing with Green Bay in 2019, he moved to the Minnesota Vikings in 2022 following a bitter contract dispute.
Smith lasted just one year in Minnesota before being traded to the Cleveland Browns. Throughout the season, he pushed for a return to the division to get revenge on his former teams.
That wish was granted when he joined the Detroit Lions in November, leading to a cringeworthy moment when he trashed the Packers after a victory in December.
Somehow, Smith managed to create an even more embarrassing spectacle after the Lions’ season ended.
On Monday, Smith took to Instagram to showcase a new piece of jewelry.
While it’s common for players to post about their achievements, the 32-year-old’s post reached a new level of awkwardness—featuring his NFC North championship ring.
VThe image couldn’t have been more ironic. Not only was it taken from Cancun, where the Lions were sent after a crushing 45-31 playoff loss to the Washington Commanders, but it also symbolized Detroit’s collapse.
The team finished 15-2 and secured the NFC’s top seed, only to fall in their first postseason game.
Adding to the humor, Smith only played half a season in Detroit, joining the team in October after Aidan Hutchinson suffered a gruesome leg injury.
Acting like a lifelong Lion after just two months is comical, especially with his caption: “The ring before the ring.”
His contract may prevent a return in 2025, but given how his past NFC North stints ended, it wouldn’t be surprising. Perhaps his journey will take him to Chicago next.
Either way, Smith will always have the division title ring he earned during his brief time in Detroit.
