Cowboys Make Significant Front Office Move After Hiring New Coach
Only a few days after hiring HC Brian Schottenheimer, the Dallas Cowboys have just announced some major front office contract
It’s been a big week for the Dallas Cowboys, who named Brian Schottenheimer as the 10th head coach in franchise history on Monday. The 51-year-old bench boss has already brought in former Chicago Bears HC Matt Eberflus as his defensive coordinator, and it doesn’t look like the Cowboys are done making personnel announcements just yet.
Cowboys News: VP of Player Personnel Will McClay Signs Contract Extension
NFL insider Todd Archer is reporting that the Cowboys have signed vice president of player personnel Will McClay to a new multi-year extension. It’s a major move for Jerry Jones & Co. as they attempt to maintain the draft success they’ve experienced throughout the last decade.
McClay’s extension is well deserved for all the hard work he’s put in since joining the Cowboys as a pro scout in 2002. As Archer points out, the 58-year-old Memphis, TN native has led Dallas’ scouting department going on 11 years at this point and has held his current VP position since 2017.
Even though McClay doesn’t get as much media attention as Jones, he’s been a key reason why the Cowboys consistently find studs in the NFL draft.
Since the start of the 2014 campaign, the Cowboys have drafted 15 players who went on to make the Pro Bowl while six of those also received All-Pro honors. Micah Parsons, Tyler Smith, Jake Ferguson, Da’Ron Bland, Trevon Diggs, CeeDee Lamb, and, of course, Dak Prescott are the current Cowboys who’ve accomplished both feats during that stretch.
It’ll be interesting to see if McClay will find another future Pro Bowl/All-Pro player in April’s draft. The Cowboys currently possess 10 selections this year with the 12th overall pick sitting at the top of their list, giving the team plenty of opportunities to find some much-needed help.
Round 1 of the 2025 NFL draft begins at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, WI on Thursday, Apr. 24
Cowboys Interviewing Player Who Ended His Career in Dallas
The Cowboys will reportedly interview former linebacker Carlos Polk for their special teams coordinator gig, who played a year in Dallas.
New Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer is working on putting together his staff for the 2025 season.
Schottenheimer hasn’t made any hires yet, but former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus could join his staff as the new defensive coordinator. While defensive and offensive coordinators are the next important positions, the Cowboys must find a new special teams coordinator.
Earlier this month, the Cowboys saw special teams coordinator John Fassel leave Dallas after the team did not extend Mike McCarthy. The 51-year-old Fassel joined the Tennessee Titans in the same capacity.
Fassel did an excellent job with the Cowboys’ special teams unit over the years as they have one of the best kickers in the league (Brandon Aubrey) and a kick return specialist (KaVontae Turpin), who can change the momentum of a game with one play.
That said, whoever takes over as the Cowboys’ STC won’t be starting from scratch going into next season. According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, the Cowboys will interview Carlos Polk, who played for Dallas in 2008 after spending the first six years of his career with the then-San Diego Chargers.
The 47-year-old Polk has spent the last three years with the Chicago Bears as their assistant special teams coordinator. Before his time in the Windy City, the former Cowboys defender and coach spent one year with the Jacksonville Jaguars as their assistant special teams coach.
In addition to coaching with the Jaguars and Bears, Polk coached with the Cowboys in 2013 and 2019, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2014-18), and the Chargers (2010-12). After his playing career was over, Polk’s coaching career started in the college ranks at Grossmont College in 2009 (assistant special teams coach).
Based on his extensive experience as an assistant special teams coach, Polk is due to become a special teams coach. However, Polk has competition for the vacancy as the Cowboys have also interviewed Denver Broncos assistant special teams coordinator Chris Banjo.
Cowboys Make Key Front Office Move Following New Coach Appointment
Just days after naming Brian Schottenheimer their new head coach, the Dallas Cowboys have made a significant front office move.
The Dallas Cowboys have had an eventful week, with the announcement of Brian Schottenheimer as the 10th head coach in the team’s history. The 51-year-old has already hired former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus as his defensive coordinator, and it appears more moves are on the way.
Cowboys News: VP of Player Personnel Will McClay Signs Contract Extension
NFL insider Todd Archer has reported that Will McClay, the Cowboys’ vice president of player personnel, has signed a multi-year contract extension. This is a crucial move for Jerry Jones and the team as they seek to sustain the draft success they’ve enjoyed over the past decade.
- McClay’s extension is well-earned due to his hard work since joining the Cowboys as a pro scout in 2002. Archer highlights that McClay has led Dallas’ scouting department for 11 years and has served as VP since 2017.
Although McClay isn’t as publicly visible as owner Jerry Jones, his influence has been vital in helping the Cowboys consistently draft standout players.
Since 2014, the Cowboys have selected 15 players who eventually made the Pro Bowl, with six also earning All-Pro honors. Players like Micah Parsons, CeeDee Lamb, Dak Prescott, and others are a testament to McClay’s eye for talent.
It will be interesting to see if McClay can discover another future Pro Bowl or All-Pro player in this year’s draft. With 10 picks, including the 12th overall, the Cowboys have ample opportunities to strengthen their roster. Round 1 of the 2025 NFL draft will begin at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, WI, on Thursday, April 24.
The Cowboys are reportedly interviewing Carlos Polk, a former linebacker who ended his career in Dallas, for their special teams coordinator position.
Brian Schottenheimer, the new head coach, is working on finalizing his staff for the 2025 season. While there have been no official hires yet, former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus may be appointed as defensive coordinator. The team also needs to fill the special teams coordinator role.
Earlier this month, special teams coordinator John Fassel left after the Cowboys declined to extend Mike McCarthy. Fassel joined the Tennessee Titans in the same role.
Fassel did an outstanding job with the Cowboys’ special teams, helping make them one of the best units in the league, with standout players like kicker Brandon Aubrey and kick returner KaVontae Turpin.
Whoever takes over will inherit a strong special teams unit. According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, the Cowboys are interviewing Carlos Polk for the position. Polk played for Dallas in 2008 after six years with the San Diego Chargers
Now 47, Polk has spent the last three years with the Chicago Bears as an assistant special teams coordinator. Before that, he was an assistant with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and has also coached with the Cowboys, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Chargers. His coaching career began in 2009 at Grossmont College as assistant special teams coach.
Given Polk’s extensive experience, he’s a strong candidate for the role, although the Cowboys are also interviewing Chris Banjo, the assistant special teams coordinator for the Denver Broncos.
