Detroit Lions Projected to Secure $30 Million Veteran to Solidify Defensive Line

The Detroit Lions have several decisions to make regarding their defensive line this offseason. Alim McNeil is recovering from a torn ACL, and his return timeline remains unclear.

Levi Onwuzurike is set to become a free agent after completing his rookie deal. D.J. Reader has been mentioned as a potential cap casualty, with the possibility of him being released to save space. With so much ambiguity at defensive tackle, the Lions may look to the free-agent market to provide more clarity at the position.

In an article predicting the landing spots of the top free agents at each position, Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox suggested the Lions could sign Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle B.J. Hill.

While targeting players from a Bengals defense that struggled in 2024 may not seem ideal, Hill could be an exception. He has been a reliable contributor for Cincinnati and made an impact against both the run and pass in 2024, even with the defense underperforming overall.

Hill recorded 56 total tackles, including a career-high seven tackles for loss, last season. He also accumulated 32 pressures, according to Pro Football Focus.

This makes him a solid fit for a Lions defense in need of improvement in both pass rush and run defense. While Hill wouldn’t be the flashiest acquisition for Detroit, he could offer much-needed stability to a defensive tackle rotation facing uncertainty.
