Eminem’s publishing company, Eight Mile Style, is suing a Detroit dealership for copyright infringement due to the unauthorized use of his iconic song “Lose Yourself” in their marketing.

Eminem has long shown support for his hometown of Detroit, but his music publishing company, Eight Mile Style, recently filed a lawsuit against a Detroit Ford dealership over the unauthorized use of his song, “Lose Yourself.”

The lawsuit, which was filed in federal court, accuses the La Fontaine Ford St. Clair dealership of copyright infringement. The exact date of the filing is unclear, but the news was revealed by Local 4 on January 28, 2025.

Eight Mile Style’s Legal Claims

In the lawsuit, Eight Mile Style alleges that the dealership used part of the song in online ads between September and October 2024. Specifically, the dealership is accused of incorporating a section of the song into its sales slogan, “You only get one shot to own a Special Edition Detroit Lions F-150.”

The advertisement promoted a special sale for the Detroit Lions edition of the Ford F-150 truck. Local 4 reported that Eight Mile Style is asking the court to rule that the dealership infringed on their copyright, cease and desist from further use, and award damages and profits related to the violation.

While neither Eight Mile Style nor Eminem has commented on the case, the dealership has responded. In a statement, LaFontaine Automotive Group emphasized their commitment to intellectual property rights and copyright compliance.

They stated, “The unauthorized use of this song was due to actions taken by a third-party vendor marketing, without the knowledge, authorization, or approval of LaFontaine Automotive Group.” The dealership concluded by saying they are working to resolve the issue promptly and in good faith.

According to the dealership’s statement, the responsibility for the error lies with the third-party marketing firm. However, Eight Mile Style is pressing forward with the legal action.
