Breaking news Lions hire former long-time college coach as new passing game coordinator.
David Shaw, the former Stanford head coach, has reportedly agreed to become the Detroit Lions’ new passing game coordinator.
This marks another shift in Detroit’s coaching staff, likely indicating the departure of Tanner Engstrand, who held the passing game coordinator role for the past two years. Engstrand has also been mentioned as a potential candidate for Aaron Glenn’s offensive staff in New York.
Shaw brings a wealth of experience from both the professional and college levels.
Having been out of coaching since 2022, Shaw most recently served as a senior personnel executive with the Denver Broncos.
This is where he crossed paths with new Lions offensive coordinator John Morton and worked with Dan Campbell’s mentor, Sean Payton, which further strengthens the connection.
Shaw led Stanford for 12 seasons, compiling a 96-54 record with five bowl wins, including three Rose Bowl appearances and two victories. He maintained at least eight wins in each of his first eight seasons.
He stepped down after a challenging four-year period where his teams posted a 14-28 record from 2019 to 2022.
The 52-year-old also played at Stanford and had been part of Jim Harbaugh’s staff for three years before taking over.
Shaw has coaching experience with quarterbacks and wide receivers in the NFL, having worked with the Baltimore Ravens (2002-2005) and the Raiders (1998-2001).
Shaw has interviewed for multiple NFL head coaching positions in recent years, including with the Chicago Bears this past cycle.
He was also reportedly considered by Chicago as a potential offensive coordinator candidate.
NFL Network reports that Shaw and the Lions have agreed to a multi-year deal.
He now joins a coaching staff that includes Morton as offensive coordinator, Mark Brunell as quarterbacks coach, Hank Fraley as offensive line/run game coordinator, and Scottie Montgomery as assistant head coach/running backs coach.
Detroit lost assistant quarterbacks coach J.T. Barrett and receivers coach Antwaan Randle El to the Bears.
Shaw’s hiring likely signals the end of Engstrand’s tenure in Detroit, with more changes expected.
