Broncos’ David Shaw Reaches Agreement on Multi-Year Contract with Lions

Reports indicate that David Shaw has reached an agreement with the Detroit Lions to become their new passing game coordinator.

NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero confirmed that Shaw, a senior personnel executive with the Denver Broncos, has signed a multi-year contract with the Lions to take on the role. Shaw will replace former Broncos passing game coordinator John Morton, who was hired earlier this week as the Lions’ new offensive coordinator under head coach Dan Campbell. Shaw now faces the challenge of maintaining the strength of the Lions’ passing offense after the departure of former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to the Bears.

Shaw came to the Broncos in June of the previous year, where he was set to join General Manager George Paton’s team to evaluate both pro and college talent. He also interviewed for the Broncos’ head coaching position in 2023 before the team ultimately hired Sean Payton.

Shaw is widely respected for his football acumen and intelligence. He recently stepped down from his position at Stanford due to the program’s direction, but prior to that, he was considered one of the sharpest minds in football. He also shared his insights on draft prospects during NFL Network’s draft coverage.

Taking over the Stanford program in 2011 after Jim Harbaugh left to coach the San Francisco 49ers, Shaw had previously worked as Harbaugh’s offensive coordinator at Stanford and as his passing game coordinator at the University of San Diego.

Shaw’s experience extends beyond college football. He spent nine years in the NFL before joining Harbaugh at the University of San Diego, with coaching stints at the Philadelphia Eagles (on the same staff as Sean Payton), Oakland Raiders, and Baltimore Ravens. This experience at both the NFL and college levels distinguishes Shaw as a versatile coach.

Shaw is the latest in a growing list of Broncos coaches and executives who have become targets for other teams during this hiring period. Defensive Coordinator Vance Joseph interviewed for head coaching positions with the Jets and Raiders, while assistant GM Darren Mougey was hired as the New York Jets General Manager. Additionally, tight ends coach Declan Doyle became the Bears’ offensive coordinator, Morton joined the Lions as offensive coordinator, assistant special teams coach Chris Banjo was hired by the Jets, and now Shaw will join the Lions as their passing game coordinator.

As other teams continue to assemble their coaching staffs, more Broncos coaches may receive interest from other organizations.
