Bronny James, the son of Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, was celebrated by the Washington Wizards crowd as he set a career-high with five points against their own team in the NBA.
The home fans were chanting the 20-year-old’s name even before he entered the game in the fourth quarter at Capital One Arena.
In addition to his five points, James contributed two rebounds, two assists, and a steal during his brief appearance, with the crowd chanting “MVP” as he capped off his performance with two free throws.
LeBron, 40, had left the game late in the third quarter after scoring a game-high 24 points and recording 11 assists, helping the Lakers to a dominant 134-96 victory.
“Bronny has had attention on him his entire life. He’s accustomed to it,” said Lakers coach JJ Redick. “He’s handled it with dignity, grace, and class, and he will continue to grow.”
The Lakers have won five of their last six games, placing them fifth in the Western Conference. Meanwhile, the Wizards sit at the bottom of the Eastern Conference following a club-record 16th consecutive loss.
Bronny James was selected by the Lakers as a second-round draft pick from the University of Southern California in June.
He made history in October when he became the first father-son duo to share the court in an NBA game, playing alongside LeBron during the Lakers’ season opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
In other NBA action, Anthony Edwards scored 36 points and had 11 assists, leading the Minnesota Timberwolves to a 138-113 win over the Utah Jazz, extending their winning streak to five games.
Jaren Jackson Jr.’s two free throws in the final seconds helped the Memphis Grizzlies, third in the Western Conference, narrowly defeat the second-placed Houston Rockets 120-119.
Darius Garland scored 26 points and Donovan Mitchell added 24 as the Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Atlanta Hawks 137-115, while the Portland Trail Blazers won 119-90 against the Orlando Magic.
