Lions running backs coach Scottie Montgomery in the running for Cowboys OC job

Lions RB coach Scottie Montgomery interviews for Cowboys OC position

Another Lions coach is interviewing for a potential promotion with a different team.

Currently, there are three other known contenders for the job: former Browns OC Ken Dorsey, Falcons tight ends coach Kevin Koger, and the leading candidate, Cardinals offensive line coach Klayton Adams, who will have an in-person interview on Friday.

Montgomery has served as the Lions’ assistant head coach and running backs coach for the last two seasons and is widely regarded as one of the most popular coaches on the team. He frequently speaks sincerely to the entire team and has played a key role in the development of 2023 first-round pick Jahmyr Gibbs. This season, Gibbs finished fifth in rushing yards (1,412), third in yards per carry (5.6), and tied for first in rushing touchdowns (16), despite sharing the workload with David Montgomery.

The Lions’ offensive coaching staff has experienced significant changes this offseason. The team has already lost offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, wide receivers coach Antwaan Randle El, tight ends coach Steve Heiden, and assistant quarterbacks coach J.T. Barrett. Additionally, the Lions have hired a new pass game coordinator, with Tanner Engstrand expected to become the New York Jets’ next offensive coordinator.
