The main weakness Hansi Flick faces in his Barcelona team

Hansi Flick, Head Coach of FC Barcelona, watches on during the LaLiga match between Deportivo Alaves and FC Barcelona at Estadio de Mendizorroza on October 06, 2024 in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain.

It is clear that Hansi Flick has made significant improvements to the FC Barcelona team since taking over last summer. Although they’ve struggled in La Liga, the Blaugranas have been one of Europe’s top teams, finishing second in the UCL group stage, only behind Liverpool.

Despite a series of disappointing results at the close of the previous year, Barcelona has begun 2025 with a resurgence, highlighted by a successful Spanish Super Cup campaign, a 7-1 thrashing of Valencia, and a direct qualification to the UCL Round of 16.

However, as noted by SPORT, there remains one issue Hansi Flick must address: goals conceded.

This has been an ongoing concern for Barcelona, as they have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last six matches. Their last shutout was in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Athletic Club. Since then, they’ve conceded 11 goals across six matches, including 2 from Real Madrid, 1 from Real Betis and Getafe each, 4 from Benfica, 1 from Valencia, and 2 from Atalanta.

The situation has been even worse in La Liga, where Barcelona has gone 10 matches without keeping a clean sheet. The only game where they didn’t concede was their 4-0 victory over Real Madrid. This defensive frailty has cost them valuable points, especially in losses to Real Sociedad, Las Palmas, Leganes, and Atletico Madrid.

So far, Barcelona has kept clean sheets in just 8 of the 33 games they’ve played this season across all competitions.

To address this issue, Flick has made the decision to change his goalkeeper, with Wojciech Szczesny now starting in place of Inaki Pena. However, this change has not yet resolved the problem, as Szczesny has also conceded many goals.

This appears to be a collective problem rather than an individual one, and Flick may need to refine his defensive tactics to prevent this weakness from affecting the team in the second half of the season.
