The Detroit Tigers significantly strengthened their pitching staff this week by adding veteran right-hander Tommy Kahnle from the New York Yankees, following his best season in his career.
Kahnle, known for his effective changeup, has been a key contributor for the Yankees in high-pressure situations over the past two years, and it seems his role in Detroit will be similar.
In his introductory media session after signing a one-year deal worth $7.75 million, Kahnle discussed his potential role with the team and expressed his willingness to take on whatever is asked of him by the coaching staff, as long as it helps the team succeed.
During the 2024 season, Kahnle posted a career-best 2.11 ERA in 50 appearances, covering 42.2 innings, striking out 46 batters, and showing versatility in his usage, including recording a save.
Although Kahnle is 35 and will turn 36 right after next season’s trade deadline, he appears to be improving with age instead of declining.
With his playoff experience, ability to perform under pressure, and veteran presence from successful stints with the Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers, Kahnle could be the ideal player to help push Detroit toward becoming a serious contender.
Despite his advancing age, Kahnle’s performance seems to be getting better, making him a valuable asset to the Tigers.
As the Tigers aim to evolve from an underdog story into a legitimate American League contender, they will need contributions from players like Kahnle to help their young core make the next leap.
Acquiring experienced players from winning teams is a smart strategy, and Detroit is clearly committed to contending in 2025.
There is still progress to be made, but the Tigers are certainly on
the right track.
