Matthew Stafford Gifts Autographed Jersey to Lions Fan Who Sold His Own to Attend Playoff Game with Daughter
The Lions’ season ended in a heartbreaking loss to the Commanders in the playoffs, leaving fans who spent a lot of money to attend the game disappointed. Among those was a fan who sold an autographed Matthew Stafford jersey to afford tickets, but Stafford made sure to send him a replacement jersey.
Last year, the Detroit Lions came up just short in their Super Bowl bid, losing to the 49ers in the NFC Championship. Despite the tough loss, it was clear the team was on the right track under Dan Campbell. They made the playoffs again, finishing with a 15-2 record to secure a bye and home-field advantage as the conference’s top seed.
The Lions were heavy favorites to defeat the Commanders in their Divisional Round matchup, but the 8.5-point underdogs shocked everyone with an upset, silencing most of the 65,000 fans at Ford Field—many of whom paid steep prices for their tickets.
Among them was Bryson Machonga, a Detroit fan now living in Wisconsin, who shared with The Detroit Free Press that he had sold an autographed Matthew Stafford jersey, some signed Badgers apparel, and “nice bottles of bourbon” to afford tickets for his eight-year-old daughter’s first Lions game.
Stafford, who spent 12 years with the Lions before joining the Rams, reportedly saw Machonga’s story and decided to send a replacement jersey. He autographed a jersey he wore for the Lions in 2014 and had someone from his current team track down Machonga’s details to deliver it.
Machonga expressed his gratitude to Stafford for going out of his way, especially during his own Divisional Round preparations against the Eagles, saying, “It just reaffirmed who Matthew Stafford is. He didn’t have to do this, and he gained nothing from it. He’s not our QB anymore…”
“Much respect to Jared Goff, but Stafford will always be QB1 for me.”
