Matthew Stafford Gifts Signed Jersey to Lions Fan Who Sold His to Attend Playoff Game with Daughter
The Lions’ season ended in disappointment in front of thousands who spent a lot of money to watch them lose to the Commanders in the playoffs.
Among them was a fan who sold an autographed Matthew Stafford jersey to afford tickets, but the quarterback has since sent him a replacement.
Last year, the Detroit Lions fell agonizingly short of their goal to reach the Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history, losing to the 49ers in the NFC Championship.
Despite the loss, it was evident the team was headed in the right direction under Dan Campbell.
They not only made the playoffs for the second consecutive year but did so with an impressive 15-2 record, securing a bye and home-field advantage as the top seed in the conference.
The Lions were heavy favorites to defeat the Commanders in the Divisional Round, but the underdog Commanders pulled off a shocking upset, silencing nearly 65,000 fans at Ford Field, many of whom had paid a significant amount for their tickets.
One of those fans was Bryson Machonga, a Detroit supporter currently living in Wisconsin.
He told The Detroit Free Press that he sold an autographed Matthew Stafford jersey, signed Badgers gear by Russell Wilson and Ron Dayne, and “some nice bottles of bourbon” to afford tickets for his eight-year-old daughter’s first Lions game.
NStafford, who played for the Lions for 12 years before joining the Rams, learned of the story.
The quarterback, now in his fourth season with Los Angeles, decided to send Machonga a replacement jersey, one he wore during the 2014 season with the Lions, after asking someone from his current team to track Machonga down.
Machonga expressed his gratitude, saying Stafford’s gesture reaffirmed who he truly is: “He had no reason to do this. He had no gain. He’s not our quarterback anymore…
No disrespect to Jared Goff, I love what Jared Goff has done for the Lions. But this is why he’s QB1 for me, forever.”
