New Findings Reveal Why Jerry Jones Was Right to Let Mike McCarthy Depart the Cowboys

New Report Explains Why Jerry Jones Let Mike McCarthy Go from Cowboys

On January 5, 2025, during the Dallas Cowboys’ game against the Washington Commanders at AT&T Stadium, head coach Mike McCarthy watched on from the sidelines as his time with the team came to an end. Despite missing the postseason, Jerry Jones made headlines with his controversial decision to move on from McCarthy. Though it seemed like McCarthy would return for another season, the Cowboys chose to part ways with him after five years, promoting offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer as his replacement for his first head coaching role.

Many Cowboys fans were understandably upset with the decision. If the team wasn’t hiring a more established or well-known head coach, why not just keep McCarthy?

ESPN’s Todd Archer offered some insight into this on Thursday. He explained that the main issue in negotiations between McCarthy and Jones was the length of the contract. Jones was reportedly offering a three-year deal, while McCarthy wanted five years, ultimately leading to their separation.

“While financial terms were not discussed, the length of the deal became a major sticking point. McCarthy sought a five-year contract, according to sources, while Jones insisted on a three-year one. Unable to reach an agreement, both sides agreed it was time to move on,” Archer stated.

Jones’ preference for a shorter contract makes some sense. With Dak Prescott signed for another four years, Jones may have wanted the flexibility to reassess the team’s direction in three years.

However, Schottenheimer signed a four-year deal. Was it not possible for the Cowboys and McCarthy to find a compromise with a four-year contract that aligned with Prescott’s contract?

Jones’ decision to refuse McCarthy’s terms, only to hire a less high-profile and lower-cost candidate like Schottenheimer, is a risky one. This move appears to have been driven by financial considerations and a desire for ultimate control over the team.

While hiring a less established coach like Schottenheimer might invite criticism, it’s understandable that Jones allowed McCarthy to leave in favor of a more cost-effective option.
