Tanner Engstrand, who had served as Detroit’s passing game coordinator for the past two seasons, was hired by the Jets on Friday, reuniting him with former Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, now the head coach in New York. Engstrand had been considered a candidate for Detroit’s vacant offensive coordinator role, but that position officially went to John Morton on Wednesday.
Engstrand’s journey with the Lions began in 2020 when he joined as an offensive assistant. He was retained by head coach Dan Campbell in 2021 and was promoted to tight ends coach in 2022. In 2023, he was named passing game coordinator and helped the Lions achieve the second-most passing yards in the NFL (4,401) that season.
In 2024, the Lions again finished with the second-most passing yards (4,474), contributing to an NFL-best 33.2 points per game.
Engstrand played quarterback at San Diego State in the early 2000s before becoming a graduate assistant at San Diego in 2005. He remained at the school, rising to offensive coordinator until 2017 when he was hired by Michigan as an offensive analyst.
The 42-year-old Engstrand later served as the offensive coordinator for the XFL’s DC Defenders in 2020 before joining the Lions.
In New York, Engstrand may be coaching 41-year-old quarterback Aaron Rodgers, should Rodgers decide to return for the final year of his contract. The Jets might also decide to part ways with him.
Receiver Davante Adams’ future with the Jets is also in question. His contract stipulates that he will earn $35.64 million in each of the next two years, and the Jets may look to renegotiate his deal.
