The New York Jets have named Tanner Engstrand as their offensive coordinator and Chris Banjo as the special teams coordinator.

The New York Jets announced on Friday the hiring of Tanner Engstrand, the Detroit Lions’ passing game coordinator, as their new offensive coordinator, and Chris Banjo, the Denver Broncos’ assistant special teams coach, as their special teams coordinator.

Earlier in the week, on Wednesday, Steve Wilks, the San Francisco 49ers’ former defensive coordinator, agreed to join the Jets as their new defensive coordinator.

These moves complete the coaching staff for Aaron Glenn, the Jets’ new head coach. Glenn, introduced on Monday, previously worked with Engstrand for four years in Detroit. Engstrand, 42, started as an offensive assistant with the Lions in 2020 and remained after Dan Campbell became the head coach in 2021.

Engstrand was promoted to tight ends coach and passing game coordinator, helping the Lions achieve one of the NFL’s best passing offenses, with the team scoring 564 points this season, the most in the league.

Engstrand will now oversee the Jets’ offense, potentially guided by quarterback Aaron Rodgers, if he decides to return for another season. Rodgers, who has one year remaining on his contract, has stated he will take time to decide on his future. The Jets and Glenn will need to determine whether to keep Rodgers as the starting quarterback.

Garrett Wilson, the Jets’ wide receiver who has posted three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, will be a crucial player for Engstrand, regardless of who is under center. The Jets also feature a solid running back group with Breece Hall, Braelon Allen, and Isaiah Davis.

The future of 32-year-old wide receiver Davante Adams remains unclear. Adams is set to earn $35.64 million annually over the next two years, and the Jets may ask him to restructure his contract or release him soon. Adams has also indicated that Rodgers’ decision could impact his own.

Engstrand, who played quarterback at Grossmont College and San Diego State, began his coaching career at the University of San Diego in 2005 under Jim Harbaugh. He spent a decade there in various roles, including assistant head coach, offensive coordinator, and quarterbacks coach. Engstrand later rejoined Harbaugh at Michigan in 2018 as an offensive analyst.

In 2020, Engstrand became the offensive coordinator and running backs coach for the DC Defenders in the XFL before moving to the Lions.

Banjo, who replaces Brant Boyer as the Jets’ special teams coordinator, is a former NFL safety and special teams standout. He played 10 seasons in the league with teams such as Jacksonville, Green Bay, New Orleans, and Arizona.

After retiring in 2022, Banjo joined the Denver Broncos as the assistant special teams coach, where he worked under special teams coordinator Ben Kotwica and assistant head coach Mike Westhoff, who is known for his expertise in special teams.
