Why Arsenal vs. Man City is the Premier League’s Most Hostile Clash

If the Arsenal and Manchester City teams are preparing for a “battle” on Sunday, the atmosphere off the pitch is similarly intense. There is little room for formalities in their relationship. This is arguably the most hostile club rivalry in the Premier League, surpassing even some of the most infamous rivalries from the past.

The 2-2 draw in September sparked more fallout than any other game this season, despite the many refereeing controversies this campaign has seen. One official from a competing club even commented on how the fallout lasted until “day six.” That match involved heavy criticism of refereeing, but also controversy over footage showing Arsenal’s executive vice-chairman Tim Lewis leaving his seat without shaking hands with Manchester City officials. This rubbed some in north London the wrong way, particularly as they believe City’s top figures don’t always make them feel welcome.

On the other hand, Manchester City views Arsenal as one of the clubs most vocal in opposing their ownership. Significantly, this tension has filtered into the locker rooms. With off-pitch ownership disputes and diminishing hopes for more trophies, Arsenal and Manchester City face off once again at the Emirates Stadium this Sunday.
