Liverpool’s transfer interest: Slot targets $62M Man Utd player and rising star

Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to nine points with a 2-0 win over Bournemouth. As attention shifts to Arsenal’s clash with Manchester City, there’s also just two days remaining in the transfer window.

Arne Slot has already stated that his team is working behind the scenes on potential moves for the summer. However, bringing in a player during January was always unlikely, especially after Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opted for PSG.

Here’s the latest transfer gossip surrounding Liverpool, with a few intriguing names linked to moves at the end of the season.

Liverpool may be looking to hijack Manchester United’s pursuit of Sporting CP’s emerging star, Geovany Quenda, according to Portuguese outlet Record. Reports suggest that the Reds are already in “talks” over a potential deal for the 17-year-old winger, who made his senior debut under Ruben Amorim. Quenda is valued at around $62 million (£50M/€60M).

The new home kit for Liverpool in the 2024/2025 season has a chrome yellow pattern design, inspired by the iconic ’84 home shirt – the season the Reds became European Champions for the fourth time in Rome and won a historic treble of major trophies. It’s available for purchase now.

Manchester United had been reportedly keen on signing Quenda in January, but a summer move seems more likely. By then, other clubs, including Manchester City and Chelsea, who have supposedly made multiple scouting trips, could also join the race.

Liverpool.com’s take: Despite Liverpool’s depth in attack, a $62M-rated 17-year-old clearly must have exceptional talent. However, spending that much on such a young player seems like a risk, and it doesn’t entirely feel like a typical “Liverpool” move.

Shifting focus to a younger target, 15-year-old Ecuadorian Deinner Ordonez is reportedly being monitored by Liverpool. The youngster plays for Independiente del Valle, the same club that produced Moises Caicedo, Kendry Paez, Piero Hincapie, and Willian Pancho, all of whom made moves to Europe.

Ordonez, who is currently participating in the U20 South American Championship, primarily plays as a center-back. His speed and versatility, often playing on the left side of defense, have drawn attention, making him one of Ecuador’s most promising young talents.

Liverpool.com’s take: Liverpool might be keeping a close watch on Ordonez’s development, but it’s likely they’ll wait before making any moves. While the South American market holds value, the Reds have perhaps not explored it enough in recent years.
