Just over six months after the Detroit Tigers traded starting pitcher Jack Flaherty to the Los Angeles Dodgers ahead of the 2024 MLB trade deadline, Flaherty is making his return to Detroit with a new two-year contract.
According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, Flaherty and the Tigers have agreed to a two-year, $35 million deal that includes an opt-out after the first season. Flaherty will earn $25 million in 2025 and is guaranteed $10 million for the 2026 season. If he makes at least 15 starts in 2025, the guarantee for 2026 will rise to $20 million.
Flaherty initially joined the Tigers before last season, signing a one-year, $14 million contract. He posted a 7-5 record with a 2.94 ERA over 18 starts for Detroit before being traded to the Dodgers in late July.
With the Dodgers dealing with multiple injuries to their starting rotation, Flaherty stepped up as the team’s Game 1 starter for both the National League Championship Series and the World Series. While he showed some inconsistency during his short time with the Dodgers, he threw a seven-inning shutout in his first NLCS start and contributed to the Dodgers’ victories in Games 1 and 5 of the World Series, earning his first championship.
The 29-year-old is set to rejoin the Tigers for his second spring training with the team later this month as he enters his ninth MLB season.
