Jared Goff Comments on Ben Johnson’s Departure and John Morton Taking Over as Offensive Coordinator

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff recently shared his thoughts on the departure of offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and the promotion of John Morton to the role.

With significant changes to the Lions’ coaching staff in 2025, most players are currently on break, so their reactions to these changes will likely come once offseason workouts begin.

However, Goff spoke publicly about the coaching shifts during his time in Florida for the Pro Bowl, offering his perspective to the SiriusXM NFL team.

Goff and Johnson had a close working relationship, so Goff expressed disappointment over his departure, particularly with Johnson taking on the role of head coach for the Chicago Bears, a division rival.

“He’s a hell of a coach. He’s a guy that’s made a ton of difference in my career,” Goff shared. “I’m obviously a big fan of his. I was joking with him. I wish he didn’t have to be in our division so I didn’t have to try to beat him twice a year, but, no, he’s going to do a great job.

Hopefully, not too good, though, with us being in the division together. But, I’ll always be a fan of his, and we’ll always have a good relationship.”

Regarding his new offensive coordinator, John Morton, Goff has prior experience working with him. Morton served as the Lions’ senior offensive assistant in 2022 when the team was transitioning to a new offense under Johnson. Though Goff didn’t go into great detail, he expressed confidence in Morton’s abilities and experience.

“We were together in 2022, he was an assistant on our staff, and has done it before,” Goff said. “He’s been a coordinator before, has a lot of experience in our league, been around a lot of great coaches. I’m excited to work with him and see where we can go.”

The Lions’ new coaches have not yet spoken publicly, but Detroit usually makes them available to the media during the NFL Combine, which runs from February 27 to March 2.
