Luka Doncic may just be the beginning for the Los Angeles Lakers. In a stunning move, the Lakers executed one of the most surprising NBA trades in recent memory, acquiring Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Anthony Davis through a three-team deal that also involved the Utah Jazz. This trade left a gap in the Lakers’ frontcourt, but an insider has revealed that the team may already have a potential target in mind.
Yahoo Sports reporter Kevin O’Connell shared on Sunday that the Lakers are exploring a trade for New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson. Robinson, who had foot surgery during the offseason, has not played this season yet. However, Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau stated that Robinson is nearing a return. “Everything has gone very smoothly in terms of rehab. The next step is the clearance for regular contact,” Thibodeau explained. “The controlled contact, you know it’s coming, so you can brace yourself for it. Once you get past that, where you’re just playing and reacting, that will be the next step. He’s pretty close.”
While Robinson could address some of the Lakers’ immediate needs by providing a strong presence in the paint and as a rim protector, CBS Sports’ Sam Quinn suggested the Lakers may need to make an even larger addition in the future. “But then, there’s the bigger picture here. Doncic needs a co-star,” Quinn noted. “That can be LeBron James for now, while Doncic settles in, but someone has to step up after LeBron is gone.”
