The Pittsburgh Steelers may part ways with starting running back Najee Harris in 2025 NFL free agency, given the strong running back draft class. Reports from Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Gerry Dulac on January 18 suggest that Harris’ return is uncertain, and ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler believes this is Harris’ best chance to secure a big deal, which is unlikely to happen with the Steelers. Although there’s a chance Harris could re-sign for a team-friendly contract if offers are scarce, the Steelers are likely to prioritize other needs.
The team has several potential younger replacements in the draft, and ESPN draft expert Matt Miller predicted the Steelers would find their next starting running back in round two, possibly selecting Quinshon Judkins at No. 52 overall.
Scouting Quinshon Judkins as a Potential RB for the Steelers
Judkins, who turned 21 in October, presents a solid replacement for Harris. His game mirrors Harris’ style but offers more speed for explosive plays, evidenced by his 28 runs of 10+ yards. According to The 33rd Team’s Kyle Crabbs, Judkins is a “scheme-transcendent player,” excelling in zone schemes while being effective in gap schemes with his power and toughness.
The Draft Network highlighted his versatility, describing him as a well-rounded running back with the skills and physique teams seek for a feature back. While he has potential as a receiver, both Crabbs and Bleacher Report’s Dame Parsons noted room for growth in his pass protection. Crabbs emphasized that Judkins’ strengths lie in his “contact balance,” burst, and quick feet, making him an ideal candidate to replace Harris, with Jaylen Warren likely remaining as the backup.
Steelers Double Down on Ohio State Playmakers in Mock Draft
In Miller’s February 3 mock draft, the Steelers are projected to take two Ohio State stars in the first two rounds. At No. 21, Miller has the Steelers selecting wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, citing the need to strengthen their receiving corps, particularly with George Pickens potentially leaving after his rookie contract.
Egbuka, known for his route running, blocking ability, and consistent hands (with a low drop rate of 2.8%), posted 1,000 yards, 81 receptions, and 10 touchdowns in the previous season. If these selections materialize and the Steelers keep quarterback Justin Fields, their offense could feature multiple former Ohio State players in 2025.
