Lakers Targeting Experienced Center in Final Days Before Trade Deadline

Lakers Reportedly Targeting Veteran Center Before Trade Deadline

The 2024-25 NBA trade deadline is quickly approaching, leaving the Los Angeles Lakers with only a few days to make moves to strengthen their roster for a playoff run.

Even though the Lakers successfully acquired future NBA MVP Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks, there’s still room for improvement. One of general manager Rob Pelinka’s primary focuses in recent months has been finding a backup center, though it remains uncertain whether he can secure a deal to enhance the team’s frontcourt.

While the center market appears to be dwindling, it seems the Lakers are focused on a veteran player who could help solve their big-man needs.

Lakers Showing Interest in Raptors’ Jakob Poeltl Before Trade Deadline

On Tuesday, SportsNet’s Michael Grange reported that the Lakers have reached out to the Toronto Raptors regarding veteran center Jakob Poeltl. The 29-year-old, who is in the second year of a four-year, $78 million extension signed in June 2023, could provide the Lakers with the help they need.

“The Lakers have inquired about (Poeltl), but the sense is the Raptors are holding out for an offer that would include a first-round pick,” Grange noted. He also mentioned that the Lakers’ only available first-round pick for trade is the 2031 selection, which could complicate negotiations.

“The Lakers know it would be pretty hard — not impossible — to get him,” a source told Grange.

According to Grange, the Raptors view Poeltl as a crucial part of their rebuilding process. The 7-foot center has been playing one of his best seasons, which makes Toronto hesitant to part with him.

Poeltl has been a standout performer in a tough season for the Raptors, averaging career highs in points (14.4), rebounds (10.3), assists (2.9), and steals (1.2) while playing a career-high 31.2 minutes per game.

Poeltl’s contract includes a $19.5 million cap hit for the next two seasons, with a player option for 2026-27. Any trade for him would likely require the Lakers to send one of Rui Hachimura, Gabe Vincent, or Jarred Vanderbilt to Toronto.

With the trade deadline fast approaching, the Lakers must act quickly if they intend to acquire Poeltl or another veteran big man to boost their playoff chances. The deadline officially ends on Thursday.
