Detroit Lions

Should the Lions complete another blockbuster trade with the Rams to win the Super Bowl?

Cooper Kupp is now available for trade across the NFL.

The Detroit Lions secured key players for their future when they traded Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams. Now, the Rams are reportedly putting one of their most established players on the trade market.

Ahead of the Super Bowl, Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp took to social media to announce that the team is immediately seeking a trade for him.

“I was informed that the team will be seeking a trade immediately and will work with me and my family to find the best place to continue competing for championships. I don’t agree with this decision, as I always thought my career would start and end in LA,” Kupp shared. “Still, I’ve learned over the years that there are many things out of your control, but how you respond to them is what you will remember.”

Could this be an opportunity for Lions general manager Brad Holmes to bring one of the NFL’s most reliable wide receivers to Detroit?

The Lions have been mentioned by various analysts as a potential landing spot for the 31-year-old.

“One league executive mentioned Detroit to me because of Jared Goff’s connection with Kupp. They came into the league together and made Pro Bowls together,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said on SportsCenter. “That kind of instant chemistry could be really fun.”

While Kupp revealed the team’s plans, Detroit may have a chance to acquire him without losing any draft picks.

If no team trades for him, Kupp could become a salary cap casualty, which would allow the Lions to sign him at a reduced cost.

Currently, Kupp is under contract through 2026. His cap hit is $29.8 million in 2025, and $27.3 million in 2026. The Lions have around $46.5 million in cap space for 2025, with $22.2 million available the following year as contracts signed last season take effect.

If the Rams were to release Kupp, they could save $15 million in cash and $7.5 million against the cap. He has just $5 million guaranteed in 2025 and no guaranteed money left in the final year of his contract. However, releasing him before June 1 would cost the Rams $22.2 million in dead money.

Should the Rams find a trade partner, salary cap constraints might require them to cover much of Kupp’s $20 million salary for 2025.

The Lions’ offense was impressive in 2024. Although adding a future Hall of Famer like Kupp could be beneficial, the Lions appear set at wide receiver, especially if they re-sign veteran Tim Patrick.

If Patrick leaves in free agency, Holmes could look to the draft for a No. 3 wide receiver to develop.
