Plans are underway to enhance the intersections of U.S. 60 and Hawes Boulevard, as well as U.S. 60 and Wrights Landing in Daviess County.
This information comes from officials at the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
The intersection at Hawes Boulevard was the location of a fatal crash on Friday, in which 44-year-old Shane Fields and 37-year-old Jordan Dyer lost their lives.
Transportation officials revealed they are working on a $3.5 million project aimed at transforming these intersections into a Restricted Crossing U-Turn (RCUT).
The project is expected to be completed by August 2026.
In an RCUT, vehicles on side streets make right turns and use median crossovers at highway intersections.
Instead of crossing the highway into oncoming traffic to make a left turn, drivers will turn right and then use a U-turn lane.
This design eliminates several conflict points, lowering the likelihood of crashes.
A review of the RCUT on U.S. 68 in Trigg County showed a 64.5% reduction in total crashes and a 71% decrease in injuries.
National studies indicate that RCUTs, on average, lead to a 54% reduction in crashes.
