While the Detroit Lions’ defense has been the primary focus of offseason discussions, there are some offensive needs that have flown under the radar. One such need could be at the wide receiver position, and now a player with six 1,000-yard receiving seasons has been mentioned as a potential target for the Lions.
Richard Silva of The Detroit News suggested that the Lions should pursue Dallas Cowboys receiver Brandin Cooks during the 2025 NFL offseason. Cooks has posted at least 550 yards in each of his 10 seasons prior to 2024, with his most recent 1,000-yard campaign coming in 2021. While he may no longer be an elite receiver, he has remained a consistent, reliable target throughout his time with five different teams. An additional benefit: Lions offensive coordinator John Morton coached Cooks as receivers coach with the Saints in 2015-16.
Cooks is coming off what has been by far the worst season of his career, especially considering he played just 10 games due to injury. In 2024, he recorded his lowest receptions per game (2.6) and a career-worst 25.9 yards per game, marking a steep decline of 14 yards from any other season. This represents a troubling trend, as his yards per game have dropped by at least 10 yards annually over the past four years.
Whether Cooks is a good fit for the Lions will largely depend on the cost. Tim Patrick is set to become a free agent, and Josh Reynolds could be a cap casualty this offseason, potentially leaving the team without a clear WR3. While the position isn’t a major priority, given the team’s strong pass-catching options in Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Sam LaPorta, and Jahmyr Gibbs, it could still be a consideration.
Patrick only managed 33 receptions for 394 yards in 2024. If Cooks can be acquired at a reasonable price, he would be a worthwhile addition as a veteran presence with a history of solid play. If not, the Lions should consider more affordable options for a potential fifth target in their passing game.
