. NBA rumors: LeBron James linked as potential free agent target for Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks (26-24) shook up the NBA by trading superstar Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers (28-19) over the weekend, causing many to question the stability of stars in their current teams. The trade was met with heavy criticism, with many fans questioning the thought process of general manager Nico Harrison. However, the Mavericks are moving forward with a clear plan.

Despite the obvious risks, the Mavs are optimistic that Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving can form a championship-caliber core over the next two to three years. The team is also looking to add another top-tier player. Dallas is reportedly eyeing Kevin Durant, either before the NBA trade deadline on Thursday or more realistically in the offseason. Harrison might even consider making another move in Los Angeles.

“Whether it’s Durant (now or later), or possibly LeBron James if he declines his player option for next season, the 52-year-old Harrison seems to be targeting high-profile stars he’s familiar with from his time as a top Nike executive,” wrote The Athletic’s Sam Amick, David Aldridge, and Anthony Slater. “The goal, of course, is to win a championship as soon as possible.”

While LeBron James is loyal to the Lakers, particularly after they drafted his son Bronny James in the 2024 NBA Draft, he is aware that the franchise is already planning for the future. With Luka Doncic’s arrival, it’s likely the Lakers will have a major star leading the way for the next several years, which may lessen LeBron’s sense of responsibility to guide the team into its next phase.

James is also close to Anthony Davis, has a strong connection with Kyrie Irving from their time with the Cleveland Cavaliers, and shares a relationship with Nico Harrison. If James decides to leave the Lakers, the Mavericks could be a natural fit.

Dallas’ strategy may still concern fans, as it’s unusual to trade away an offensive powerhouse who just led a team to the Finals at age 25. But the Mavericks’ clear championship ambitions show that management has a vision. Whether or not it works will likely depend on their next major move, assuming one is on the

horizon.
